The Kimberleys (DFF 2018)
The Kimberleys

With a life long history of involvement in and on the borders of folk, The Kimberleys have developed a sound which is both true to the tradition and refreshingly original. Great folk anthems such as Tam Lin and Elsie Marley retain their familiarity, but with fresh and vital arrangements they shine like new pennies recalling the excitement of folk revival greats such as Fairport Convention and Pentangle. Isobel Kimberley possesses a startlingly authentic voice with a range bridging that of June Tabor and Sandy Denny. Coupled with her singular guitar skills and idiosyncratic approach to harp and ukulele, she defines The Kimberleys sound in unique fashion. Vocalist, guitarist and arranger Jim Kimberley is the perfect complement and foil to Isobel's strong musical personality with a sparse and rhythmic approach to the guitar, inspired arrangements and uncannily familial vocals. The Kimberleys have recorded with folk icons Gordon Giltrap, Andy Cutting (Leveret, Blowzabella, 3 time BBC Radio 2 Folk musician of the year award winner) and Dave Swarbrick (Fairport Convention). Toured and performed with Wolfscote (Telegraph Best Folk Albums, producer Jim Kimberley), The Albion Band, Julie Felix and cult acid folk innovators Comus.
“One of the most distinctive voices on the folk music scene”Digital KPIt can be difficult to take a well-known traditional song and attempt to do something new with it. Those of us with long memories will recall that once upon a time you could be run out of town just for thinking about it.
